This week's Teal Spotlight Team is Carli's Angels

This week we are excited to highlight team Carli’s Angels in our Teal Spotlight.  Team Captain Liz Baronfsky shares that the team first got involved in the Sandy Sprint in 2017, when her sister, Carli, was diagnosed with stage 3C ovarian cancer.

Within 48 hours of her diagnosis, Carli DeMayo was in surgery to remove her ovaries, (her uterus was already out), part of her liver and portions of her bowel. Post-surgery, she began extensive chemo.

Team Carli is made up of family members and close friends.  The team created a Facebook group for Carli once she started treatment in 2017 for close friends and family to keep up with everything. When they created their team in memory of Carli this year, they began posting about it on their social media platforms.

They currently have recruited a few people, but are quickly adding teammates, hoping for at least 25 participants. Most of team Carli’s Angels participants are local, however, since the event is virtual this year, they will be asking some friends and family in Florida and Tennessee.

Sadly, Liz and Carli’s father passed away at age 40 from cancer in 1991. Because most people in their network know about my Carli and their family, fundraising online and sharing the walk in her honor is the best way for their team to fundraise.

Liz is a full-time nurse a and shares that her co-workers have always been supportive of her efforts and hopes to do a lot of my recruiting at work.

When asked to share their thoughts on helping raise awareness and to find a cure for ovarian cancer, team captain Liz  shared, “Thank you for everything you do. There was a time when my sister was in remission, very briefly. We attended one of your runs/sprints at the Philadelphia Art Museum and she was able to join the “survivors group” and get her picture taken with them. That was a great moment for her. She was glowing and I remember how proud she was for not being another statistic. We lost our dad when we were really little to cancer.  It was always a fear of Carli’s to pass the way our father did so when she got her diagnosis it was a really hard pill for all of us to swallow.”
