Welcome to Whitney's page, for my sister Brooke
My sister, Brooke, was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in July 2016. Since our father had just died 4 months prior, we were consumed with preparing his house for sale that had miraculously sold in April, the month after he died. Brooke had been making multiple "weekend" trips (15 hours one way from Philly to Hilton Head) between his death, his funeral, prepping the house, moving, and selling his boat and cars. By the time May and June rolled around we were both exhausted. When she said she wasn't feeling well in July we both assumed it was stress. One test led to another and she found herself hearing the words, You Have Cancer. It still seems impossible. She is a person who consistently and constantly works out - yoga, weights, cardio, bike, all of it, and some days multiple classes per day. We were shocked to say the least. Fortunately she was led to an amazing surgeon who did a full hysterectomy in August 2016. She had the rare (less then 5% of all ovarian cancers), type where there was a fast growing tumor, and because of that, it was caught early on a scan. She has endured Chemotherapy for 6 months and is now recuperating. And yet, as her cancer support group has nicknamed her, she is still "the Energizer Bunny". Brooke was lucky, it was caught early, the surgery took out everything suspicious, and she followed it with chemotherapy for insurance. Yet, we are still tentative as we continue to breathe deeply that she has come through this. We, Brooke's Believer's, follow her example of never ever giving up and keep showing up, especially in working out! This weekend for the walk/run we hope to bring awareness to a typically silent cancer, and hope to raise money towards finding a cure. Thank you.
